The development of brown paper bags

Nov 03, 2022

Kraft paper bag applicable scope: chemical raw materials, food, pharmaceutical additives, building materials, supermarket shopping, clothing and all applicable to kraft paper bag packaging industry.

Back in the 19th century, before the advent of large-scale retail, people often bought everything they needed from a grocery store near where they worked or lived. It is a headache to sell everyday goods to consumers piecemeal after they are shipped to grocery stores in large quantities in barrels, sacks or wooden boxes. People can only go out shopping with baskets or homemade linen bags. At that time, the raw materials for papermaking were jute fiber and old linen head, which were of low quality and scarce in quantity, and could not even meet the needs of newspaper printing.

Around 1844, the German Friedrich Kohler invented wood pulp and paper, which greatly promoted the development of the paper industry and indirectly gave birth to the first commercial paper bag in history. In 1852, American botanist Francis Waller invented the first paper bag making machine, which was later extended to France, Britain and other European countries. Later, the birth of plywood paper bags and the progress of paper bag stitching technology made the cotton bags used in the past for bulk cargo transportation were replaced by paper bags.

When it comes to the first brown paper bag for shopping, it was created in 1908 in St. Paul, Minnesota. Walter Duvina, a local grocery store owner, started looking for ways to get customers to buy more at once in order to boost sales. Duverna said it would be a prefabricated bag that was inexpensive and easy to use and could hold a minimum weight of about 75 pounds.

After repeated experiments, he will be the quality of a material of this bag lock on the kraft paper, because it USES the longer conifer wood fiber pulp, in the process of cooking by chemistry more moderate caustic soda and alcali sulphide chemicals processing, make the strength of the original wood fiber damage is small, thus finally made of paper, close connection between fiber, paper is tenacious, Can withstand large tension and pressure without rupture. Four years later, the first kraft paper bag for shopping was born. It is rectangular at the bottom and has a larger volume than the traditional V-bottom paper bag. A rope runs through the bottom and sides of the bag to increase its load-bearing capacity and create two easy-to-hold loops at the top of the bag. Duverna named the bag after himself and patented it in 1915. By this time, more than one million bags were being sold annually.

With anti-plastic in vogue around the world, environmentalists are turning their attention to the ancient brown paper bag. Since 2006, McDonald's China has gradually introduced a brown paper bag with insulation properties to hold takeaway food in all its outlets, replacing the use of plastic food bags. The move has also been well received by other retailers, such as Nike and Adidas, which used to be big consumers of plastic bags, and have begun to replace plastic shopping bags with high-quality brown paper bags.
